Nsedu Obot Witherspoon, MPH
Executive Director

   

Ms. Witherspoon serves at the Executive Director for the Children’s Environmental Health Network (CEHN), where her responsibilities include successfully organizing, leading, and managing policy, education/training, and science-related programs.  Ms. Witherspoon has directed and been personally involved in the oversight and organization of CEHN’s Strategic Plan to serve as the “Voice for Children’s Environmental Health” in the nation’s capital for the past 9 years. She serves as a key spokes person for children’s vulnerabilities and the need for their protection, conducting presentations and lectures across the country.  Ms. Witherspoon is a leader in the field of children’s environmental health, serving on the leadership of the American Public Health Association’s (APHA) Environmental Health Section and as Chair for the Intersection Council.  Ms. Witherspoon is member of the NIH National Association of Environmental Health Sciences (NAEHS) Council and Coordinator of the National Institutes for Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) Public Interest Partners.  She is a member of the Children’s Health Protection Advisory Committee for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and serves on the Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Healthy Housing Guidance Manual Expert Panel.  In the child care arena, Ms. Witherspoon serves on the Caring for Our Children Environmental Quality Technical Panel where she is working to include environmental health considerations into child care standards.  In addition, she serves on the Eco-Healthy Child Care National Advisory Committee and the Material and Content Committee.  Ms. Witherspoon has a BS in Biology and a Master’s in Public Health in Maternal and Child Health, from The George Washington University.

Ms. Witherspoon has a published chapter on climate change and children’s health in the book titled:”The Way We Will Be 50 Years from Today: 60 of the World’s Greatest Minds Share Their Visions of the Next Half Century.”  (2008). She is a co-author on the publication titled: “Incorporating environmental health into pediatric medical and nursing education.” Environmental Health Perspectives 112: 1755-60 (2004).
