Mission Statement

 
The American Medical Center (AMC) Cancer Research Center is a national, independent, not-for-profit research institution. AMC became the first institution in the U.S. to focus its research efforts completely on cancer prevention and control. AMC now a national leader in this proactive fight against cancer. The Research Center is organized into four research centers, each representing distinct but complementary areas of cancer investigation. They are the Center for Cancer Causation and Prevention; the Center for Behavioral Research; the Center for Community Science; and the Center for Research Methodology and Biometrics. Each center involves a group of expert investigators from diverse scientific disciplines.

    As a cancer prevention research institute with several investigators working on health promotion projects, the AMC issues several publications which address topics such as skin cancer prevention curriculum for elementary schools and educating youth on sun safety and protection. Publications include health promotion materials/programs that were developed and evaluated for effectiveness through NCI and foundation grants. A unique UV protection/sun safety (skin cancer prevention) education program for children in grades K-5 was developed from a grant from the NCI. The materials include CD-ROM's, storybooks, lesson plans, and student activities.
