    P
APEN Youth Initiative: Young Laotian girls in Richmond, CA live in one of the most toxic areas in the country. Laotian women have the highest death rate from breast cancer in Contra Costa County. There is growing evidence of the direct correlation between age of exposure to toxics and the incidence of cancer in women.

Our goal with the Youth Initiative is twofold: to strengthen the Laotian community in Richmond through developing the leadership of girls and young women, and to assess the needs and potential strategies for ongoing youth organizing in the broader Asian Pacific Islander community. Through a carefully developed series of games, projects, discussions, workshops, trainings and field trips, the girls have a chance to develop and administer surveys; photograph, map, and document toxic hazards within their neighborhoods; identify issues of environmental justice that affect their communities; and prepare a community presentation on their findings. An integral part of the curriculum is basic skills in community organizing such as having productive meetings, recruiting new members, choosing the right issues to work on, public speaking, and how to fundraise.
