Mission Statement

The California Birth Defects Monitoring Program is a public health program devoted to finding the causes of birth defects so they can be prevented. The program is funded through the California Department of Health Services and is jointly operated with the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation.
  • Geographic focus: California
  • No membership
  • Other organizational activities (not directed specifically toward children): advocacy, education, research
  • Children's Environmental Health Activities

    Birth Defects Registry:

The Program tracks rates and trends with its registry-a database of medical and demographic information on children with birth defects. The Program monitors half the state's births, more than 275,000 every year.

    Scientific Studies:

Large case-control studies are conducted to identify the causes of birth defects. Many studies use interviews with mothers and take biologic samples to study gene-environment interactions.

    Community Service:

The Program communicates its findings directly to health professionals and the general public through reports, presentations at community meetings and the media.
