Mission Statement

The Center for Health, Environment and Justice (formerly Citizens Clearinghouse for Hazardous Waste) trains and assists local people to fight for justice, become empowered to protect their communities from environmental threats and build strong locally controlled organizations. CHEJ connects these strong local groups with each other to build a movement from the bottom up.

  • Geographic focus: national
  • Membership: 3,400 organizations and individuals
  • Other organizational activities (not directed specifically toward children): advocacy, assistance, education, grantmaking, organizing, public/voter education, regulation, research, training
  • Children's Environmental Health Activities

CHEJ educates the public about environmental toxins and their influence on children's health. CHEJ helps concerned parents in contaminated communities to identify and understand environmental health threats to their children. CHEJ helps communities take steps to eliminate specific chemical exposures by providing customized community organizing assistance and by referring them to skilled grassroots leaders in other communities who have won similar fights.
