Mission Statement

 
The mission of the National Center for Environmental Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), is to provide national leadership, through science and service, to promote health and quality of life by preventing and controlling disease and death resulting from interactions between people and their environment.

    The National Center for Environmental Health conducts public health surveillance, applied research (i.e., epidemiologic studies, laboratory analyses, statistical analyses, behavioral interventions) and provides technical, financial and training assistance to state, local, and international health agencies. Some specific children's health projects that the center has worked on or is currently working on include:
    • Childhood lead poisoning

    • ZAP Asthma, a comprehensive community-based asthma prevention project

    • Studies of the health effects of air pollution

    • Residential methyl parathion exposure

    • Sulfates in drinking water

    • Pesticide exposure in children and the Agricultural Health Study

    • Environmental tobacco smoke and children
