Draft, August 1996

The Exposure Factors Handbook is a one-stop source for data on human behaviors and characteristics which affect exposure to environmental contaminants. The Handbook provides a summary of the available statistical data on various factors used in assessing human exposure; data for children are included when known. Volume I, General Factors (EPA/600/P-95/002Ba) includes an introduction and discussion of uncertainty and provides data on drinking water consumption, soil ingestion, inhalation rates, and dermal factors, including skin area and soil adherence factors. Volume II, Food Ingestion (EPA/600/P-95/002Bb) provides data on consumption of fruits and vegetables, fish, meat and dairy products, homegrown foods and breast milk. Volume III, Activity Factors (EPA/600/P- 95/002Bc) provides data on human activity factors, consumer product use and residence. In each volume, the basic equations using the parameters for calculating exposure levels are provided as are the recommended values for various segments of the population, including children, who may have characteristics different from the general population.
