Mission Statement

The mission of the Institute of Medicine is to advance scientific knowledge and the health and well-being of all people of this nation and the world, consistent with the role conferred by its congressional authority. It accomplishes this mission by providing objective, timely and authoritative information to government, the professions and the public through its elected membership and access to the best expertise.

  • Geographic focus: national and international
  • Other organizational activities (not directed specifically toward children): education, research

  • Children's Environmental Health Activities

The Board on Children, Youth and Families was created in 1993 under the joint aegis of the National Research Council (the operating branch of the National Academy of Sciences) and the Institute of Medicine. The Board was established to provide a national focal point for authoritative, nonpartisan analysis of child, youth and family issues relevant to policy decisions. The Board is uniquely positioned to bring the collective knowledge and analytic tools of the behavioral, social and health sciences to bear on the development of policies and programs for children, youth and families by synthesizing, analyzing and evaluating scientific research on critical national issues.

The Board is conducting a study of the health impacts of child and adolescent labor in the United States. One of the topics the study will consider is exposure to toxins in the workplace (including but not limited to pesticides and herbicides on farms). This study will produce a report that should be available in 1998.
