Mission Statement | |
| The goal of
Mothers for
Clean Air is to educate ourselves and the public about Houston-Galveston
air
quality and its effects on children's health; to encourage the
participation of
children in learning about air quality; and to do what we can as
individuals to
prevent air pollution and reduce children's exposure. MFCA is represented
on
several local committees and boards where decisions regarding air quality
are
made. These include regional as well as local groups, and involve
representatives from business, industry, all levels of government, the
health
profession, and the environmental arena.
Children's Environmental Health Activities
| MFCA encourages the participation of children in learning about air quality. The organization presents a puppet show that teaches young children about local air pollution at area events located at shopping centers, museums, the zoo, arboretum and Earth Day festivals. The group also sponsors field trips where kids can get a first hand look at sources of air pollution. In addition, MFCA is conducting an ozone education program for day care centers in East Houston to reduce young children's exposure to ozone. Day care centers are connected with a fax notification system to warn them when ozone levels are expected to be high. Day care staff are educated about appropriate actions to take when ozone is hazardous to breathe. Day care centers are invited to participate in a workshop where parents and staff will learn about ozone and how to reduce air pollution. | |
