Mission Statement

The mission of the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects and reducing infant mortality. The March of Dimes carries out this mission through the Campaign for Healthier Babies, which includes programs of research, community service, education and advocacy.

  • Geographic focus: national
  • No membership
  • Other organizational activities (not directed specifically toward children): advocacy, education, grantmaking, organizing

  • Children's Environmental Health Activities

The March of Dimes (MOD) supports programs that promote its mission of reducing infant mortality and preventing birth defects. MOD has been especially interested in women and men of childbearing age who are exposed to substances that may damage sperm or egg cells or affect developing fetuses during particularly vulnerable windows of time in utero. A long-standing, on-going, peer-reviewed research program explores the interface between the environment and maternal/fetal health. MOD has acted as a convener of major conferences on environmental research, as well as on its special concern about women in the workplace. Environmental issues are frequently addressed by the Bioethics Committee. MOD staff and volunteers, as well as the Office of Government Affairs, seek to raise both public and professional awareness of environmental hazards as they affect prospective mothers and fathers and their offspring, before and after birth.
