Mission Statement

The National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) is a non-profit, membership organization serving all 3,000 local health departments nationwide. NACCHO is dedicated to improving the health of people and communities by assuring an effective local public health system. As the voice of local public health officials at the national level, NACCHO is able to promote the local perspective on national health programs and policies. This is accomplished by:

-developing technical competence, managerial capacity, and leadership potential of local public health officials and the local public health workforce;

-building partnerships and collaborative relationships with state and federal health agencies and other national organizations with an interest in health; and

-maintaining communications with local health officials to serve as an exchange point for information and ideas

  • Geographic focus: national
  • Membership: 3,000 local health departments
  • Other organizational activities (not directed specifically toward children): education, research, technical assistance

  • Children's Environmental Health Activities

    NACCHO has a policy resolution on children and the environment and has published a series of articles in its newsletters based on the 1994 symposium sponsored by the Children's Environmental Health Network and more recent events. NACCHO supports the efforts of local health departments to protect all children from environmental health threats including the following:

    -initiating nationwide education programs to encourage childhood immunizations and tobacco-free kids.

    -sponsoring awards to recognize outstanding local health department programs for environmental health, tobacco free youth, maternal and child health, multicultural health, and primary care.

    -supporting demonstration sites aimed at reducing traffic safety injuries among children and minority populations.

    -providing guidance to federal initiatives impacting children's environmental health, such as the CDC's lead screening guidelines.
