Mission Statement

The National Education Association Health Information Network (NEA HIN) believes that sound public education must begin with school employees and students who are healthy and free of preventable diseases and supported with information, materials and training opportunities that reaffirm these wellness values. The NEA HIN envisions the day when all education employees and their students have the information and skills needed to stay healthy and to occupy buildings that are environmentally sound and violence-free. To help realize this vision, NEA HIN provides NEA members, students and families with information and training geared toward reducing health risks, developing health-enhancing behaviors and promoting a safe and healthy environment.

  • Geographic focus: national
  • Membership: 2.3 million members
  • Other organizational activities (not directed specifically toward children): education

  • Children's Environmental Health Activities

NEA HIN has two cooperative agreements with the US Environmental Protection Agency: one for indoor air quality and one for drinking water quality. The Indoor Air Quality in Schools Program trains NEA members from every state to use the Indoor Air Quality Tools for Schools Action Kit, a guide that offers inexpensive methods to prevent and solve indoor air quality problems in schools. Members trained through this program will utilize the Action Kit in their local school districts and offer educational workshops on indoor air quality to local and state affiliates. The Drinking Water Quality in Schools Program provides education and training to NEA members on safe drinking water issues. The goal of this program is to enhance the ability of classroom teachers to teach environmental education programs on water quality issues. The NEA HIN is also initiating programs on asthma and smoking and is working on an environmental health curricular package for high school students.
