Mission Statement

The mission of the National PTA is to support and speak on behalf of children and youth in the school, in the community and before governmental bodies and other organizations, to assist parents in developing the skills they need to raise and protect their children and to encourage parent and public involvement in the public schools.

  • Geographic focus: national
  • Other organizational activities (not directed specifically toward children): advocacy, education, lobbying, research

  • Children's Environmental Health Activities

The National PTA has adopted a number of position statements and resolutions on environmental issues that reflect the concerns of our membership. These topics include pesticide use in schools and day care centers, environmental quality, childhood lead-poisoning prevention, hazardous waste management, outdoor balloon releases, recycling and ecology, indoor air quality, emergency preparedness, hazardous substances in the home and pesticide residues. Two additional position statements, Earth Week and Education for the Environment, support PTA efforts to increase environmental awareness. To advance the intent of our position statements and resolutions, the National PTA has worked extensively with Congress, the US Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) and other organizations on a wide range of environmentally-related activities.

The National PTA has collaborated with the US EPA in developing a number of publications targeted to parents to help them understand environmental hazards and to provide them with information to help eliminate the hazards in schools. This collaborative effort included the publication and distribution of The ABC's of Asbestos in Schools, Every School Should Take This Simple Test (radon brochure) and Environmental Hazards for Schools. In 1995, the National PTA and the EPA collaborated on creation and dissemination of Radon Community Action Kits and the Indoor Air Quality Tools for Schools Action Kit to educate parents, school officials and community leaders.

In November 1995, the National PTA entered a cooperative agreement with the US EPA to increase PTA members' awareness of environmental concerns. Highlights of this cooperative agreement include the development of the National PTA's environmental awareness program; the publication of Our World, a quarterly environmental newsletter; environmental issues training conferences for state PTA leaders; environmental workshops at the annual NPTA convention, Earth Week activities; and the publication of the National PTA Leaders Guide for Environmental Issues.
