Physicians for Social Responsibility-the US affiliate of the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW)-is committed to the elimination of nuclear weapons of mass destruction, the achievement of a sustainable environment, and the reduction of violence and its causes. The active conscience of American medicine, PSR uses its members' expertise and professional leadership, influence within the medical community and strong links to policy makers to address this century's greatest threats to human welfare and survival.

  • Geographic focus: national
  • Membership: 16,000 individuals
  • Other organizational activities (not directed specifically toward children): advocacy, education, lobbying, organizing

  • Children's Environmental Health Activities

The Environment and Health Program was established to expand PSR's mission to encompass new challenges to human health posed by contamination of the environment due to human activities. The Program addresses: dioxin and medical waste incineration, pesticides, safe food and drinking water, clean air and water and children's environmental health. Two problems that pose a particular threat to a sustainable global future and remain areas of high priority are contamination of the environment by persistent toxic chemicals and the health effects of global climate change. The Environment and Health Network links activists and issue experts working on these issues across the country and builds grassroots campaigns to educate the public about key environmental health policies.
