Glossary Terms National Priorities List (NPL) The Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) listing of sites contaminated by toxic materials that have undergone preliminary assessment and site inspection to determine which locations pose immediate threat to persons living or working near the release. These sites are most in need of cleanup.(5) Superfund The program operated under the legislative authority of the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act of 1980 (CERCLA), and Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act of 1986 (SARA) that funds and carries out EPA solid waste emergency and long-term removal and remedial activities. These activities include establishing the National Priorities List, investigating sites for inclusion on the list, determining their priority, and conducting and/or supervising the site cleanup and other remedial actions.(1) Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act (SARA) The 1986 legislation that broadened ATSDR's responsibilities in the areas of public health assessments, establishment and maintenance of toxicologic databases, information dissemination, and medical education.(2) |
