Mission Statement

The mission of the Safer Pest Control Project is to reduce pesticide use throughout rural, urban and suburban Illinois and to stimulate and help implement widespread adoption of safer alternatives to routine pesticide use in Illinois.

  • Geographic focus: Illinois, Midwest
  • Membership: four organizations: Business & Professional People for the Public Interest, Illinois Stewardship Alliance, Illinois Environmental Council Education Fund and Sierra Club Illinois Chapter
  • Other organizational activities (not directed specifically toward children): advocacy, education, legal research, technical assistance

  • Children's Environmental Health Activities

The Safer Pest Control Project works proactively to reduce pesticide use through integrated pest management (IPM) implementation in Chicago public schools (420,000 children) and Chicago public housing. At Henry Horner Homes - public housing on Chicago's west side - IPM implementation is underway in 1000 units. The plan includes educational components for residents, including a 16-page comic book drawn by a local artist.
